"I want you all out-gone-dead-exterminated!" high strung Alex Household cried out, when, after a lifetime of struggle, he lost the starring role in a new play called The Hooded Owl-to an actor who couldn't remember his lines. But did that mean that it was Alex who had shot the leading man dead during his climactic speech? charles Paris, for one, could see many logical suspects, from the devious producer to the gullible playwright to the young starlet's overprotective mother. But before our middle-aged actor-drinker-detective could begin his investigation, he was in for a shock: the powers-that-be chose him as the new leading man. Finally, Charles would discover stardom-and what a dead man saw in the last moments of his life!

MURDER UNPROMPTED concerns the murder of a major star in a minor play in London's West End. Charles Paris, a dedicated, but largely unsuccessful actor and part-time amateur sleuth, solves the mystery and reveals what the dead man saw in his last moments of life. Simon Brett is a gifted writer, and he depicts the theater world in believable detail. Geoffrey Howard is a highly competent reader who captures the personality and style of the characters, especially those of the low-key detective/actor, Paris. A satisfying listening experience! D.G. Simon Prebble steps easily into the life of Charles Paris, British actor and sleuth. Here, Charles is an understudy in a production struggling to survive with a star who can't remember his lines. There's a lot of tension on and off the stage; Prebble makes the most of every sentence. The murder takes place on stage halfway through, and solving it is second nature to Paris. Prebble does vocal wonders with all the supporting players, as well as his all-too-human hero. Those who favor tidy British dramas expertly presented will love this and want to check out the other Brett-Prebble collaborations available from Recorded Books. J.B.G.
